On 1 January 1997 possibly the most significant piece of legislation the nation had seen since federation commenced operation. The Workplace Relations Act 1996 (Cth) was to herald in a new area of industrial relations.

Gone would be the days of employers and employees relying upon industrial tribunals to decide wage increases. The new legislation would provide the parties with an opportunity, to discuss and negotiate their own terms and conditions of employment.

Such dramatic changes have since provided employers with an opportunity to explore and introduce innovative changes to their business operations. These changes not only involve a reassessment of production techniques and business practices, but more importantly the way the business addresses its greatest asset, their employees.

To implement such dramatic changes to the workplace, is not only daunting but can be fraught with numerous legal and employee relations pitfalls.

An understanding of the correct procedures and principles, may best be implemented by engaging the services of a professional who has expertise in such matters. However this again can be restricted due to financial constraints, that may impinge upon such a project.

Such a process should be simple to follow, minimal in expense and above all readily acceptable by both management and staff as the best approach to workplace bargaining.

Australian Workplace Agreements being conscious of such needs and requirements for Australian small businesses, has developed a workplace bargaining manual which has been registered under the trade mark of Australian Workplace Agreements ® .

In coming editions of this newsletter service, we will be introducing you to our workplace bargaining manual, which explains the reasons for change, how to achieve such change and finally how to implement and record such changes in a legally binding document.

On behalf of Australian Workplace Agreements we hope you will find this manual of great benefit to both your business and your employees, and wish you every success with any future Workplace Agreement project you may wish us to assist you with.
